Frequently Asked Questions
What Is a Doula?
The word doula is Ancient Greek in origin. Its original meaning was 'Female Slave'. Nowadays, a doula can better be described as a person trained to provide non-medical, physical, emotional, and informational support to women and their partners throughout pregnancy, childbirth, and the immediate postpartum time period.
Why Hire A Doula?
Sometimes even our sweetest moments are met with a little anxiety or fear. Having someone by your side that is knowledgeable about pregnancy, the birthing process, and capable of maintaining a calm presence in a situation that can sometimes become stressful, can help to make your sweet moment a little more smooth, and a lot less sticky.
What can you expect?
My basic package includes a complimentary meeting to get to know one another, two prenatal meetings, in person birth support, one postpartum visit, and unlimited phone/email support.
During our prenatal meetings, we will discuss your history and goals for your upcoming birth, as well as what you want my role to be. We will also discuss comfort measures, position options, and go over any questions you may have. I will also work with you to create a birth plan if desired.
How I support you during the birthing process will vary depending on the goals and circumstances surrounding your birth. Generally speaking, I will offer you, or guide your partner in offering you, physical support (counter pressure, massage, rebozo work, etc.), emotional support (working to maintain desired ambiance, encouragement, reassurance, etc.), and informational support (knowledge of labor stages, position options, an understanding of basic protocols, etc.). I can also take (non-professional) photos, if time allows. Additionally, I will stay with you for up to two hours after your birth to help you and you partner get settled, and help with babies first feeding (and/or mom and partners).
Our visit postpartum can be as soon as a couple of days postpartum or as late as 6 weeks postpartum, and will last 1-2 hours. During our final meeting, we will go over your birth, I will answer any questions you have, and can help with additional infant feeding support. I can also assist you with babywearing if desired.
As your doula, I will work with you to support the birth you want. I will offer comfort, compassion, and respect to you and your partner through the birthing process, whatever that looks like for you. I will not judge you for how you choose to birth, where, or for what choices you make surrounding your birth and your baby. This is your moment.
Let's work together to make it as sweet as can be!
